Hill, William Elliston, Acting Lance Corporal, R/10380, 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps
Born Spondon, Derbyshire

Wlliam was the eldest son of Roland (1854-1928) and Annie (née Elliston, 1854-1937) Hill. He had an older sister, Emily Ethel (b. 1886) and a younger brother, Albert Elliston (1898-1962). A further brother, Edwin was born in 1892 but died in infancy. Emily married Harold Rowland in 1906, and, in 1924, they emigrated to New Zealand with their 4 children.

In 1891 and 1901, William is living with his family in Chapel Row, Borrowash, but in 1911 is lodging at the home of Norman Perkins, bricklayer, at 29 Chapel Street, Borrowash

He enlisted in Derby in February, 1915 and died of wounds 16th August 1916, possibly in the Battle of Mametz Wood, part of the Somme campaign. He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, III, D, 30

He is commemorated in Spondon cemetery (pictured here).
